Haiti Disaster

I have always been one that keeps on top of the news and pop culture, however in the last couple of weeks life has been so hectic that I have lost track of what is happening in the world. So when someone mentioned that Meryl Streep had beat herself out at the Golden Globes the other night – she was nominated for two roles in the same category – I was embarrassed to say I didn’t know what they were talking about. Of course, not as embarrassed as I was about not being more aware of what is happening in Haiti. Of course I knew there had been an earthquake and had kept up generally on what was happening but it wasn’t until I started watching the images on TV that teh reality of the horrible situation these people were in really hit home. It is mind boggling. That being said, I must say I am quite proud of how the kids in our community have rallied to the cause. This weekend, the Halifax Boys Honour Choir raised over $4,000 by packing groceries. One of the kids hockey team raised $500 by passing a hat. My children’s school has put in a chores program so everyone can make a difference and raise money. I could go on, as every few hours an email comes through with another great initiative. So today, I want to encourage everyone to do something. Every bit counts. There are many great organizations but if you aren’t familiar with any, just contact the Red Cross and they will make sure the money goes to those in need.
