The Queen and Umbrellas
I spent a very soggy day yesterday all in the name of motherhood. To be fair, it was all my fault. My son was singing for the Queen (and the Prime Minister and the Governor General and an assortment of Nova Scotia dignitaries) at the Garrison Grounds for the Queens official welcome to Nova Scotia yesterday. This is a big event when you are eleven years-old (or even 50 years-old I would guess). I, however, had a busy work day scheduled. As a result, I made no plans to go to the Garrison Grounds and support the kids or welcome royalty. Then, at 2:00 pm, about 45 minutes before the kdis were scheduled to perform I realized this was a mistake. Here was something my son had worked hard to get ready for and I wasn’t going to be a part of it. So I grabbed my umbrella and headed out in torrential rains to greet the Queen and suport the Halifax Boys Honour Choir.
Although this was a triumph of motherhood – I was definitely doing the right thing – it was not one of planning. I was wearing high heels, a suit, no raincoat or hat, and nothing more than an umbrella I had picked up at Chapters over the weekend. It was black and seemed utilitarian when I decided to buy it but yesterday, as I stood among hundreads of people on soggy grass I noticed it had an interesting feature. On the inside of the umbrella was the image of Nova Scotia’s newly renovated Province House. So here I was watching the Queen with her official residence – in this Province – keeping me dry, sort of. What a strange and wonderful day.
